Making Friends

This week we started our Making Friends unit. One way to make friends is by being kind. The Friendly Fireflies have been talking about ways we can show kindness to others.  You may have noticed your child wearing an orange dot on their hand. Yesterday, we listened to Mrs. Evans read the book A Little Spot of Kindness. After reading the book, we placed orange dot stickers on our hands to remind us to be kind to others. As we continue to learn and grow as a school family, we will continue having these conversations with our friends.
We have introduced the letter "Aa" to our class this week as well as the short Aa sound such as a-a-apple. In our small group rotations, we are: practicing writing the letter A, building the letter A out of 2 big lines and 1 little line, making the sound letter Aa makes, and picking out words that start with the short Aa sound. We are also introducing the high frequency word like.
This week in Math, we are working on mid-module assessments covering the concepts that we have learned so far this year. Our students have also been working one on one with Mrs. Lalumondier completing their myIGDIS math assessments. With this data, we will be able to better focus on each of our student's needs.
Child Development Parent/Teacher conferences will be taking place after all of our Math and Literacy state assessments have been completed.  A sign-up sheet will be going out through email closer to the date.

The Safe Place

The Friendly Fireflies have been working hard this week on our social skills. They were very surprised when after reading, When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry...Mrs. Lalumondier became very angry (role-play!)  and had to go to the "Safe Place".  They were then introduced to the "Safe Place" and taught how they can help to calm their bodies once they are there. We have also learned about bullies this week and read several books about how to use our big voice with friends who may need reminders of how we would like to be treated.
During our Alphabet Time, we are reviewing the letters of the alphabet, pointing out capital and lowercase letters, finding the first letter of our names, and working on sound positions (first, middle, and last). Our students have also been introduced to the high frequency words: I, a, and see.
Our Math lessons have been focused on sorting and one to one correspondence up to 3. Today they played "Peek A Boo" math and really enjoyed it.
We are also loving this fall-like weather and playing outside with our friends!

Silly Quote of the week:

"Hey Mrs. Lalumondier, I just had a birthday. I am 52 now!"

A Great Start!

We have had a great start to the year especially considering the crazy 3 day week last week! We have learned a lot about being a part of a school family as well as how to work with our school family. We have talked about using our big voice, being a STAR, several breathing techniques to help calm our bodies, as well as how to be helpful instead of hurtful.
Last week, we started our small group rotations. Each child works within a group that rotates around the class to the Literacy Teacher Table, Math Teacher Table, and to an independent play group. So far, we are doing well. We start out with small amounts of time and add as our year and students progress.
Please see below for important dates and information. We are looking forward to a great year together!

We have been busy learning about nature and specifically insects for the last 2 weeks. This afternoon, we released our classroom butterflies that emerged from their chrysallis' last Friday. Our Friendly Fireflies were very excited watching them grow and change! We were sad to see them go, but excited to think about spotting them around Bookman Road.
We were also sad to see Ken leave Bookman. He moved to Tennessee last week but came by for one more visit. We will keep him in our hearts every day!
Parent/teacher conferences are next week. If you have not signed up for a time, please do so ASAP. If there is not a time that works for you, please let me know so we can find a time that will work. I am very excited to show everyone how much our students have learned this year. I am amazed every day by how much they have grown!
Our end of the year party will be held on Tuesday, June 4th at Saluda Shoals Splash Pad. Permission slips have gone home and a sign-up sheet will go out shortly to sign up for food and supplies for the party. We hope that everyone will be able to attend this fun, family event!

The Week of the Young Child

Did you know that next week is The Week of the Young Child? Each day of the week has a special title such as: Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday, and Family Friday. You may want to check out the NAEYC website for more information and ideas that you can incorporate at home. To celebrate this special week, we will be planning fun activities each day and each child will receive a small bag of items to take home. As you know, we will be going to see The Learning Station on Thursday. This did conflict with the Bookman Field Day. Although we will be unable to participate in next week's field day, Child Development will be having their own special field day on May 23rd (more information to come). We would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Nord's class for planning our field day for us!
Don't forget, Friday is an early dismissal day as well as Purple Up day for military children.

We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!

We are really looking forward to our zoo trip on Friday! Please check your child's folder for zoo trip reminders that were sent home today. We have scheduled the remainder of our field trips for the year. Please check the dates to remember below and add them to your calendar as well as the other important dates.

Just a reminder...the Learning Station field trip on the 11th will be for Child Development students and teachers only due to limited space in the auditorium. This trip does fall on the same day as the BRES field day. Child Development will be having a special field day in May that is being planned by Mrs. Nord's class. We are looking forward to having field day fun in May!
