Welcome, Ms. White!

We are continuing our Domino's Pizza Fundraiser. Thank you in advance for any help raising money for the Center for Child Development. Because, we are not a site school, Child Development does not have a PTO to help raise money. This money may be used for items that would not be available without additional funds. Please collect and turn in any money by Monday, January 27th. This is the absolute last day that money can be turned in. Thanks again for all of your help!
We are still working on our literacy unit of study "Our Neighborhood" specifically focusing on helpers within our community. Thursday, we will visit the Richland County Public Library for storytime and Doko Meadows Park after for a picnic lunch and playtime on the playground. This Friday, we will have a Community Helper parade where each child can dress up as the Community Helper of their choice. We have had some really creative home made costumes. There is no need to go out to buy anything!
Last week, we welcomed our new Student Teacher, Leanna White, to our Friendly Firefly classroom. Ms. White will be with us for seven weeks and we are so excited to have her here with us. Welcome, Ms. White!

Friendly Firefly Service Learning Project Opportunity:
(email excerpt from Quinne Evans, Child Development Director)
We have been gifted with an opportunity to collectively serve our colleagues in Kershaw County at North Central Highschool.  As you know, an EF-2 tornado ripped through the school causing millions of dollars in damage.  Luckily, it happened on a weekend so that no one was hurt but the devastation is unimaginable.  The student body will finish out the school year at a vocational school and they are doing so with zero supplies.  Here is where our service opportunity comes in!  Each school in Richland Two will be getting a box of supplies together for one of the highschool's teachers.  Child Development will purchase this.  But, I'd like to go a step further and involve each of our students and staff members in contributing $1 (or any amount) to the purchase of a Wal-Mart gift card from CFCD.  There is a quick turn-around for this so here is what I need each classroom to do:
-communicate this service learning opportunity to your students and families
-set up a donations container in your classroom
-get your students to create 1 individual class card of encouragement for the highschool staff
-coordinate pick-up of contributions with me

I would like to run this service learning project for 1 week (January 21st-January 28th.  Then, I will make sure our CFCD gift gets delivered by Friday, January 31st.  This is a perfect example of a helpful act and a way to support the development of empathy within our children.

If you would like to contribute supplies to our program's basket, here is a list of needed items:

  • classroom first aid kits
  • clipboards
  • clocks for classroom walls
  • cork boards, small
  • desk calendars
  • dry erase boards, individual-sized
  • paper, colored copier paper
  • pencil sharpeners, electric
  • poster putty, blue
  • posters - inspirational
  • posters - subject-specific
  • power strip surge protectors (new)
  • scissors, adult-sized
  • staplers
  • storage - plastic rolling drawers or large 3-drawer storage containers
These items are needed by this Thursday afternoon  ($ due in by Jan. 28th).

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their time over the winter break. Mrs. Young and I were greeted this morning by 20 smiling faces, ready to return to school! It is nice to be back together with our school family.
This week, we are starting a new literacy unit of study "Our Neighborhood" and in math we are working on counting by adding one more up to the number 8. Also, we just found out today that Child Development is sending us on a special trip this Thursday!!! Permission slips have been sent home today. Please sign them and return them tomorrow (thank you!) If you can, please write on the form if your child will need a school lunch or if they will bring a lunch from home that day.

Here are some ideas of ways to help with home/school connections:
Ideas for Busy Families
On the Move
In this unit, your child is learning about neighborhoods.
  • Point out places in your neighborhood such as schools, parks, and firehouses. Talk about the purpose and use of each place to help your child understand a neighborhood.
  • As you pass by each neighborhood place, talk about your experiences with it. Then invite your child to share his or her experiences and opinions about the place.
At Bath and Bed Time
In this unit, your child is learning all about different neighborhoods.
  • Before bed time, look through books that show different neighborhoods with your child. Talk about how they are the same and different.
  • Then invite your child to talk about what he or she likes best about each neighborhood you review. Ask your child what he or she likes about your neighborhood.

Focus Letters Rr, Ee, Bb, Ll
Unit Theme Neighborhood Places and Workers
