No Scrooge's here!

Happy Friday!

My friends had a great trip to the Koger Center today to see "Scrooge". We had fun clapping for the ballet dancers and yelling out "Brava!" and "Bravo!". We even learned some ballet positions too!  Our friends had such a busy day that we didn't even get to nap...so they may be extra sleepy tonight!

We have a lot planned for the last two weeks of school and we are looking forward to our Holiday party on Thursday, December 20th. Please contact our homeroom parent, Mrs. Little (her contact information was sent home this week), if you would like to donate items for the party or $$ towards the pizza.

We Are Thankful!

Happy Tuesday!

This past week and a half, we have spent time talking about Thanksgiving and being thankful. Our friends had time to reflect on what they are thankful for. We created a class "thankful turkey" which is displayed on our classroom door. 

Mrs. Young, Mrs. Sakarcan, and I are thankful to have the opportunity to work with your children each and every day. Thank you for allowing them to be a part of our school family.

Thank you to our Veterans!

Happy Friday! 

I hope everyone has had a great week! We have had many fun and exciting events lately concluding with an AMAZING Veteran's Day program today at Bookman Road! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put together a wonderful breakfast and program for our Veterans and their families. We are so thankful to all of our Veterans and their family members who sacrifice so much for our freedom!!

We have started a new unit of study which is families. Below, I have posted a letter from our WOW curriculum talking about some things you might want to do at home with your children. During this unit, we will focus on the letters Tt, Ii, Nn, and Cc in addition to reviewing our letters that we have learned in our last unit (Aa, Mm, Ss, and Pp). Each day during our alphabet time, we review our letters and the sounds that the letters make. Together, we may do group writing, practicing skywriting our letters, rolling letters out of dough, building letters out of wood pieces, and practice writing letters on paper. Along with name writing practice at home, also practice writing these letters with your child while reinforcing the name and sound that the letter makes. Next week we begin a new math module as well.  I have also included the math family newsletter below. 

Please check the dates below for our next two field trips. Our trip in December will have limited seating, so unfortunately we will only be able to have a few parents/grandparents attend. I will send a sign up for those slots once I verify the number of seats that are available. Also, we are not sending home a snack calendar at this time. We had an abundance of snacks sent in over the past couple of months. We are going to use up some of these extras before requesting more. Thanks so much for your willingness to provide snacks for our class!

Ideas for Busy Families

In the Kitchen

In this unit, your child is learning about the importance of day and night.

• Engage your child in a discussion about day and night. This will help your child better understand these science concepts.

• Discuss how day and night are alike and different. To illustrate this concept, talk about things in the kitchen that are alike and different. For example, compare an apple and an orange.

At Bath and Bed Time

In this unit, your child is learning all about home and the things in it.

• Walk through your home with your child. Invite him or her to describe items, such as plants, windows, and closets. Having this discussion will help your child to develop his or her vocabulary.

• Then invite your child to explore his or her bedroom or sleeping area. Ask: What is this part of your home like?

It's Pumpkin Time!

Are you ready to pick pumpkins? We are!! Monday, we will be heading to McBee to McCleod Farms for our first field trip. We are SO EXCITED!!! We will be loading the buses around 8:30 or a little after so that we may leave by 9:00 at the latest. It is about a 45 minute drive so we want to make sure we get there on time! If you have signed up to be a chaperone, please remember that you will follow the bus or meet us there. Remember, we will be going on a hayride so please dress your child accordingly (hay is itchy)! You may want them to wear jeans so the hay doesn't bother them. (We will put your child's field trip shirts on here over their clothes.) Each child will get to bring home their own pumpkin that they have picked out. We have told them that they have to be able to carry it because Mrs. Young and Mrs. Lalumondier won't be able to carry 20 pumpkins!!  

Next week is also College & Career Awareness Week. Please see the special activities each day below.

Happy Friday! Here we are again after another unexpected break. I hope everyone faired well through the storm! Fingers crossed that we will have no more days off due to weather issues!! 

In math, we are learning how to count the "math way". Ask your child to show you how to count the "math way". Also, we have been working on the letters A and M and their letter sounds. We have learned a song for each letter and have practiced letter sounds by singing The Letters on the Bus. Ask your child to sing it for you!

Pajamas and Pie! Oh, my!!!

     Happy Friday! Our friends quickly jumped right back into the routine after our unexpected break. This week in math, we worked on sorting by number. Our friends had a lot of practice making groups of items by number (up to 3). We have learned that we can count by number, count on our fingers, count by looking at dots (on our dot cards and on the dice that we used this week). We learned the "On 5, We Jive" chant. Ask your child to teach it to you! 

     

     Next Friday, we have an early dismissal. If your child sends in $1 to donate to the United Way, they will get to wear pajamas to school on Friday. So send in your money next Monday through Thursday in order to participate. Also, they can bring in their spare change or dollars to vote for a teacher to get a pie in the face. See the notes below.

We have been super busy in the Friendly Firefly class! We have been working on our classroom and school procedures, reading and discussing our morning messages, books, and shared writing, as well as doing small group literacy lessons & math lessons. We have talked about using our BIG VOICE when we don't like something and how to tell friends what we want them to do instead. We have talked about ways to be helpful and not hurtful. We commit to using our: watchful eyes, listening ears, kind words, gentle touches, and walking feet each and every day. Please talk with your children about these commitments and why we make them here at school. 

I have attached a family newsletter from our math curriculum as well as our literacy curriculum below. There are some ideas on how you can help connect their learning at home with what we are learning at school.

BEACON FAMILIES,

BEGINNING MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2018, PARENTS/GUARDIANS WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN-IN THROUGH our LOBBYGUARD SECURITY SYSTEM IN THE MAIN OFFICE TO ENTER THE BUILDING AT ANY TIME. 

*THIS INCLUDES DURING MORNING DROP-OFF FROM 7:30-8:00 A.M.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FLEXIBILITY AS WE CONTINUE TO WORK TO ENSURE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES.

This means that you will no longer be able to walk students down to class unless you first check in at the lobbyguard station in the front office. Our students may be dropped off in the car rider line. They will enter the building and walk down to class. Teachers are stationed in the hallway to ensure that our students get to where they need to go.

At Bath and Bed Time

In this unit, your child is learning all about himself or herself.

• Ask your child to identify his eyes, nose, and mouth. Talk about what each body part does to help your child develop vocabulary and self-knowledge.

• Invite your child to close his eyes and explore a stuffed animal or pillow. Ask:How does this feel? Then invite your child to open his eyes and describe the object.

On the Move

During the first weeks of PreK, your child is getting acclimated to school routines.

• Point out schools in your neighborhood or schools that your child might eventually go to. Talk about how children at different ages go to different schools to learn. This will help your child to attach a sense of purpose to going to school.

• When you pass by a school, take the opportunity to explain to your child what he or she might learn and do there.
